As a TSEA retiree, you are eligible to participate in Dental and Vision coverage through Ameritas and VSP. These plans are available to retirees and provide comprehensive preventive and restorative care.

Dental Coverage — Ameritas
Two dental plan options are available to retirees. Both include preventive, basic, and major services through the Ameritas dental network.

Answers to the most common questions about your TSEA voluntary benefit plans.
The Manhattan Life Accident Plan covers a wide range of accidental injuries including broken bones, dislocations, lacerations, burns, and concussions. It also pays benefits for related expenses like emergency room visits, ambulance transport, hospitalization, follow-up doctor visits, and physical therapy. Benefits are paid directly to you regardless of what other insurance you have.
No — one of the biggest advantages of these voluntary plans is that benefits are paid directly to you, not to a provider. That means you can use any doctor, hospital, or specialist you choose. There are no network restrictions. You simply receive care, submit your claim, and the benefit is paid to you in cash.
The Manhattan Life Critical Illness plan pays a lump-sum benefit upon diagnosis of covered conditions including heart attack, stroke, cancer, major organ failure, and end-stage renal disease. The benefit is paid directly to you to use however you need — whether for medical bills, mortgage payments, groceries, or any other expense. Review your plan document or check the brochure in the Your Plans & Resources section for the full list of covered conditions.
The Hospital Indemnity plan pays a fixed cash benefit for each day you are hospitalized, regardless of what your primary health insurance pays. Think of it as extra income during a hospital stay — it can help cover your deductible, out-of-pocket costs, or everyday expenses like rent and groceries while you recover. The two plans work independently, so you can collect from both.
Yes, most Short Term Disability plans include an elimination period — a short waiting period before benefits begin. This is typically 7 days for an illness and may be shorter for an accident. Once the elimination period is satisfied, you receive a benefit to help replace a portion of your lost income while you are unable to work due to a covered illness or injury. Please also note that the Short Term Disability plan includes a 12/12 Pre-Existing Condition Limitation — meaning if you have a condition that was diagnosed or had symptoms in the 12 months prior to your effective date, no benefits will be paid for that condition during the first 12 months of coverage. Check your plan certificate or ask Federated Marketing for your specific terms.
Term Life provides coverage for a set period of time (such as 10 or 20 years) and pays a death benefit if you pass away during that term. It is generally more affordable and straightforward. Whole Life provides permanent coverage for your entire life and also builds cash value over time that you can borrow against. Both plans through Manhattan Life can be valuable tools for protecting your family — the right choice depends on your personal financial goals.
The Ameritas dental plan covers three tiers of care: preventive services (such as cleanings, exams, and X-rays) are usually covered at 100%; basic services (such as fillings and extractions) are covered at a percentage after any waiting period; and major services (such as crowns, bridges, and dentures) are also covered at a percentage. The annual maximum benefit is $1,000 for the Select Dental plan and $1,500 for the Premier Dental plan. Review the Ameritas brochure in the Plan Documents section or contact Federated Marketing for full coverage details.
Under most VSP vision plans, members are eligible for a covered eye exam once every 12 months. Contact lenses are covered once a year and frames are covered every 2 years. VSP has one of the largest networks of eye care providers in the country — use the Find an Eye Doctor link in the Service Center to locate a provider near you.
Yes! You can enroll in as many of the available voluntary plans as you choose during your enrollment period. Many members pair plans together for broader protection — for example, combining an Accident Plan with Short Term Disability ensures you have both immediate cash benefits after an injury and ongoing income replacement during recovery. Federated Marketing can help you build the right combination for your needs and budget.
Many of the voluntary plans offered through TSEA are portable, meaning you may be able to take your coverage with you if you leave employment — often without needing to re-qualify medically. Portability terms vary by plan and carrier. Contact Federated Marketing as soon as possible when a job change occurs to understand your options and avoid any lapse in coverage.
